Medieval Knight Templars Private Tour - Tomar Convent and Almourol Castle from Lisbon
This is the perfect tour to know some more about Portugal, on a very special private day tour north of Lisbon (approx 1h distance).
In one day we will be covering one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal, Tomar, north of Lisbon, famous for it's Knight Templars Order (Convent of Christ), and also Almourol Castle, built in the middle of the Tejo River.
In one day private tour from Lisbon, we will start the day with a stop at the Almourol Castle, built in the middle of the river, one century BC, more than 2.000 years ago, conquered by the Portuguese in the 12th century. If the weather conditions allow, cross the beautiful Tejo river by a very short 2minute boat ride and visit the castle inside. Video Highlights here
After visiting Almourol, the tour will continue to the beautiful village of Tomar, with a guided visit to old narrow streets, including a stop at the old Jewish Quarter, and also a stop at the old Jewish Sinagogue, the best preserved medieval Sinagogue in Portugal, currently hosting the Abraham Zacuto Museum, National Monument since 1921.
A stop for lunch will be followed, near the center of the village.
After lunch, we will head with a guided visit to the Castle of Tomar, hosting the unique Convent of Christ, one of the most important monuments in Portugal, former stronghold of the Knight Templars Order, built more than 800 years ago and classified by UNESCO as World Heritage since 1983. Includes also a visit to the Charola, the polygonal Knights Temple/Church inspired in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, along with the multiple cloisters and former rooms of the old convent.
* During winter, and ocasionally during other seasons, crossing the river towards Almourol Castle may not be possible, but the castle can be seen from outside. On these days, a short visit to Constancia Village nearby will replace a visit to the castle.

The Knight Templars Order Tour will show you some of the most important places in Portugal, north of Lisbon (only approx 1h drive), covering some of the most historical places in Portugal, related with the Knight Templars Order. Although the itinerary can be adjusted during the day, this is the standard/suggested itinerary:
- Departure from Lisbon Region around 9AM (Flexible)
- Arrive at Almourol Castle around 10h15m and stop for a visit (1h30m) - If weather conditions allow, cross by boat to the island where the castle is located (2 minute boat ride). If not possible, visit to the castle will be replaced by a stop at Constancia village nearby.
- Head to Tomar, and visit the old village, including the old Jewish Quarter, and stop at the Old Tomar Synagogue - Abraham Zacuto Museum (1h)
- Stop for lunch (1h - meal not included)
- Free time in the Old Village of Tomar (optional - 30min)
- Head to the Convent of Christ (Castle of Tomar), and enjoy a guided visit inside the old Convent (1h45m)
- Finish the private tour and return to Lisbon region for drop-off

* It's possible to include a visit to Fatima on this tour, if shortening the time in Almourol and Tomar. Please let us know in advance.
Pick-up and drop-off in Lisbon (Hotel, Airport or cruise terminal) can be arranged per request - you can select option during booking process.
Pick-up time is scheduled for 9AM, although this can be changed per request / Flexible start and end time for cruise ship passengers.
Same place as pickup or any other agreed place per request.
Drop-off is scheduled between around 5PM, although it can be changed if you need to get back earlier.

- Single travelers are accepted on all our private tours, paying two adult tickets.
